New Insight Report on Information & Communications Technology: ICT- Line of Sight to Africa's Technology Future. Summary of 75-page report here. Full report available to clients on www.afrsun.com, and for purchase on www.afrsunstore.com.

Africa Joins the Digital Age. Data traffic is surging. Cheap smartphones bring Internet access to millions of new African customers each year. Fiber, 4G/LTE, and satellite connectivity is pushing deeper into the continent. Innovators are solving local problems, creating and disrupting industries. New power solutions will make local data hosting viable, reducing costs and boosting demand. Buyers want the newest, most cost-effective, and most advanced technology so they can enhance performance and returns.

This is Real, Not Vaporware. AfricaCom attracted 10,083 delegates and over 375 exhibitors to Cape Town in November—including virtually every big global name. This is a competitive battlefield, with names like Huawei, Cisco, Ericsson, and ZTE vying for dominance. What will it take to thrive and profit in Africa? A large R&D commitment and understanding of the needs of African customers; a truly local presence, with decision-making capacity close to African markets; and an unwavering corporate commitment to the region.

Advanced Solutions Work Best. Vendors showcased cloud computing, software-defined networking, network function virtualization, creative power solutions, and innovative ways to bring affordable broadband connectivity to rural customers. Africa’s lack of outdated legacy networks allows carriers to start from scratch with the most capital-light, cost-efficient, flexible, and agile systems and solutions.

Recent Travels: We recently returned from Nigeria, Rwanda, Kenya, and Ethiopia. In Nigeria and Rwanda, we traveled with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker and our fellow members of the President’s Advisory Council on Doing Business in Africa. Separately, we met with about two dozen companies and attended the Corporate Council on Africa’s US-Africa Summit in Addis. Stay tuned for reports to come out soon.

What’s Next? We are putting together our schedule for the next several months, to include: attendance at the Africa Energy Forum (www.energynet.co.uk) and the Africa Rail conference (www.terrapinn.com) in June. We also plan return visits to Nigeria, Angola, and Kenya. Contact us if you would like to join any of our trips.

Staying the Course: We remain constructive on the long-term outlook for a number of sectors in key African markets. In the wake of a turbulent 2015 and a challenging start to 2016, we urge clients to focus on sectors and countries with the strongest fundamentals. Our January 2016 report is worth a look: African Sunrise Outlook: Eyes on the Prize: Africa in 2016, available to subscribers or via www.afrsunstore.com. In this report, we highlight our view that sectors including ICT, financial services, power, and agribusiness have solid fundamentals and a bright long-term outlook.
