The South African rand fell to a 13-year low against the dollar this week after investors sold off emerging market currencies amid heightened expectations of an interest rate hike in the United States. The currency is trading at R12.30/$.
Eskom - the nation’s cash-stripped power supplier suspended CE Tshediso Matona and three other executives on Thursday pending an inquiry into the "status of the business and its challenges". The economy continues to carry the burden of Eskom’s distresses as manufacturing production decreased by 2.3% in January 2015 compared with January 2014 after increasing by 0.9% in December.
The Nikkei index has passed 19 000 for the first time since the dot-com bust, to reach a new 15-year high, following on the U.S market’s strong day and as exporters benefit from a weaker yen.
